Engraving for winery signs and plaques

Engraving puts the words that matter into the walnut, metal or acrylic itself. Cellar Sign Studio engraves venue and room names, vintages, cask details, dedications and competition results, and picks the marking method to suit the material you chose.

What wording do you need to send for an engraved winery sign?

Send Cellar Sign Studio a typed line for each field: the venue, the space, any message and any year. For a bottle or cask piece, add the producer, the wine or cask name and the vintage. Type everything exactly as it should read, including accents in grape names and the capital letters in your brand.

What does engraving look like for a set of named rooms?

Think of an estate with three guest spaces: the main tasting room, a barrel hall used for club dinners and a terrace. Each gets a Tasting Room Sign with the same top line, the estate name, and its own second line: The Tasting Room, The Barrel Hall, The Terrace. Only that line changes, so the three signs match. The trouble starts with small differences. One draft says Barrel Hall while the booking page says Barrel Room. We ask which is right before engraving, because guests will use the sign to find the room named on their reservation. The founding year, if you want one, is set the same way on all three.

Start with the wall or entry location and the distance visitors will read it. If hours or reservation instructions change, keep them on a separate notice so the main sign remains useful over time.

How do your words get onto the wood or metal?

01

Choose the lead line

Decide what a guest should read first. On a room sign that is usually the space name. On a Bottle Display & Award Plaque it is the wine, and on a cask plate it is the cask name. Other lines are sized below it.

02

Type it, do not photograph it

Copy names from your label files or website text instead of retyping them from a bottle. Keep diacritics, ampersands and spacing as they appear on the label. Mark anything you still need to confirm with the winemaker.

03

Go through the proof piece by piece

The proof lists the engraved lines for each sign or plaque in turn. Read each against your own records, slowly. Vintage years and cask numbers are where slips hide, since a wrong digit still looks like a tidy plaque.

Questions about engraving for winery signs and plaques

What wording do you need to send for an engraved winery sign?

Send Cellar Sign Studio a typed line for each field: the venue, the space, any message and any year. For a bottle or cask piece, add the producer, the wine or cask name and the vintage. Type everything exactly as it should read, including accents in grape names and the capital letters in your brand.

Can grape names with accents and umlauts be engraved?

Yes. Type the name with its marks in place, such as the umlaut in Gewürztraminer or the accent in Rosé, and say so in your message so nobody strips them out. Some decorative fonts lack these characters. If the font you picked is missing one, we show a close alternative on the proof.

Can a vintage or medal be added to a plaque later?

Sometimes. If you expect to add a result or a new vintage, tell us before the design is drawn. The layout can leave a planned space, or the plaque can take a separate small plate. Adding a line to a finished piece with no space left for it usually means making a new one.

Does engraving look the same on walnut, metal and acrylic?

No. On walnut the engraved line is darker than the surface around it. On copper-tone metal the mark depends on the finish, and on clear acrylic it shows as a frosted line. The proof shows layout and wording, not the exact contrast, so ask what reference is available if contrast will decide your choice.

Is engraving charged separately from the sign?

It depends on the piece and the amount of wording. Product page estimates cover the design as shown with its standard fields. Extra lines, a second engraved side or an engraved logo may add to the work. Your written quote from Cellar Sign Studio spells out what the engraving line covers.
